Al-Jazeera lawyer says decision to keep Baghdad office closed "illegal"
Transcript of September 4 Aljazeera broadcast, featuring interview with AJ's lawyer:
Kurayshan: Iraqi forces have stormed Al-Jazeera offices in the Iraqi capital Baghdad and sealed them with red wax. The forces also broke down a door on the second floor of the offices. This comes at a time when the one-month closure of the offices ended. The Iraqi government extended the closure indefinitely.
We have with us from Baghdad Haydar al-Mulla, Al-Jazeera lawyer in Baghdad. Mr Haydar, what exactly happened today?
Al-Mulla: A large force from the Iraqi Interior Ministry, composed of 10 officers and more than 30 policemen, this morning stormed Al-Jazeera offices in Baghdad to make sure that Al-Jazeera is abiding by the closure order, which was issued by the interim Iraqi government. We dealt with the police forces in a positive and open manner. They verified that Al-Jazeera is abiding by the closure order by entering the offices and seeing there was no staff there. Furthermore, they also were able to verify this, thanks to the dust which had accumulated on the equipment and the desks in the offices. They took photos of the offices and wrote a report about this. They also took all the necessary measures that would make the interior minister, who is the person behind issuing the order to storm the offices today, fully convinced that the Al-Jazeera offices are abiding by the closure order. After that, they sealed the offices with red wax. They are now present in Al-Jazeera offices in compliance with the orders issued to them by the office of the interior minister.
Kurayshan: What are the results of your contacts with the officials?
Al-Mulla: We contacted the office of the prime minister to discuss the issue of the closure order. The prime minister sent a delegation from the National Media and Communication Committee, headed by Ibrahim al-Janabi, to discuss the closure order with us. The meeting took place on Thursday 2 September. The meeting was positive. We expressed our views and our commitment to our neutral journalistic line through adopting the policy of allowing different persons to express themselves openly on the air. We presented the professional honour document as a gauge of our journalistic line. They asked us a number of questions and dealt with these questions in a positive manner. There was supposed to be a meeting tomorrow 5 September to discuss the questions they asked us. However, we were surprised with the government's decision to extend the closure.
Kurayshan: If the situation continues in this manner, will you file a lawsuit?
Al-Mulla: The measure taken by the Iraqi government to extend the closure at a time when our negotiations were proceeding positively discredits this government. We therefore believe that Al-Jazeera has a legitimate, moral and legal right to resort to the courts to decide on the issue of the interim Iraqi government's decision. We believe that this decision is an illegitimate and illegal decision.
