Iraqi media body issues code of conduct, sanctions
From Baghdad's Al-Shira:
Muhammad Jasim Khudayr, member of the Higher Media Commission, has announced that the commission will start working within the coming few weeks and Ibrahim al-Janabi will most likely be selected as chairman.
In an interview with Al-Shira, to be published in full in the next issue, Khudayr revealed that the commission prepared a list of regulations to organize the work of the media called "Professional code document", which consists of nine points:
1. Observing objectivity, truthfulness and impartiality in covering and disseminating news and reports.
2. Refraining from encouraging the use of violence as a means to settle political contentions.
3. Refraining from agitating sectarianism and ethnic and religious sedition in the Iraqi society.
4. Respecting Islam as the faith of the majority, without detriment to the other faiths, and honouring the cultural values and historical symbols and whatever has to do with the civilization and heritage of Iraq.
5. Abstaining from the dissemination of grudges, hatred and division within the components of the Iraqi society and respecting all groups of the Iraqi spectrum.
6. Abstaining from the use of the media for libel and infringement on the privacy of individuals and groups, and respecting the public taste and feelings.
7. Showing no support whatsoever to the acts of burglary, robbery, kidnapping, bombing and killing civilians and members of the armed forces and foreigners working in Iraq; and refraining from promoting any kind of terrorist threats and demands.
8. Granting the wronged a fair chance to disprove what the media source published that has done him any kind of material or moral harm, and pledging to publish his reply or clarification in a suitable place and time in the same media source, and apologizing to him or fairly compensating him, according to the law.
9. Guaranteeing transparency and honesty of the sources of finance for the media source and accepting no money assistance that aims to undermine security and stability in Iraq.
Khudayr explained that these provisions will also be the regulations for the press work in Iraq. In case of violating one of these provisions, suitable measures will be taken against the violator, which may include referral to the court, said Khudayr. In addition to this, the commission will write a set of punishments to correspond to the level of the violation. These will include notification, issuing an apology, imposing a fine, and closing the news media.
